Friday’s Sessão da Tarde to Air 1990s Classic Remake

TV Globo’s afternoon movie slot, Sessão da Tarde, airs on Friday, May 29, the 2020 film The Witches (Convenção das Bruxas), a modern remake of the classic story that scared many children in the 1990s. The broadcast is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Brasília time and the original runtime is 1 hour and 45 minutes. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, and Stanley Tucci.

The story follows a young boy who loses his parents in a car accident and goes to live with his grandmother. While they are at a market, the boy notices a strange woman, prompting the grandmother to take him to a hotel she believes is safe from witches. However, the hotel is actually hosting a witches’ convention, where the guests are plotting to turn all of the world’s children into mice.

Based on the work of Roald Dahl, the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this version of The Witches was directed by Robert Zemeckis, the filmmaker behind Back to the Future. The movie updates the familiar fantasy-horror tale for a new generation while keeping the elements of suspense, humor, and magical menace that made the original story memorable.

The film’s appearance in Sessão da Tarde adds a family-oriented option to Globo’s weekday afternoon schedule, bringing a well-known adaptation to free-to-air television. For viewers familiar with the original 1990 film, this remake offers a newer interpretation with a high-profile cast and modern visual effects.
