Don Williams, one of country music’s most enduring stars, is back in the spotlight more than eight years after his death with the release of a new album, Epilogue: The Cellar Tapes. The record, now available on major streaming platforms, features 12 previously unheard songs that were discovered in recordings Williams left behind. The project offers fans a rare chance to hear fresh material from the Country Music Hall of Fame member, who died in 2017 at age 78 after a career that produced 17 No. 1 hits and made him one of the most recognizable voices in country music.
Williams’ son, Tim Williams, spoke with PEOPLE about the album and the emotional process of hearing his father’s unreleased performances. He said the tapes had been stored for decades in a storm cellar at the family home where he grew up, and that he initially felt uncertain about the discovery. That changed when he heard the vocals. Tim said the moment he listened to his father sing, he felt as though he was hearing Don Williams in his prime. The raw recordings gave him a new appreciation for the singer’s natural ability and the strength of his voice without studio polishing or modern production techniques.
According to Tim, hearing the unprocessed vocals was especially powerful because there was nothing to hide behind. He described the recordings as a reminder of his father’s skill, noting that the experience deepened his respect for Don Williams as an artist. The simplicity of the tapes, recorded long before today’s digital tuning and editing tools, highlighted the classic craftsmanship that helped define Williams’ sound throughout his career.
Producer Garth Fundis, who worked with Don Williams for many years, also played a key role in assembling the album. Fundis helped organize the collection and choose its title. He explained that he wanted a single word that could best capture the spirit of the release, and he landed on “Epilogue” as the most fitting description. The name was quickly agreed upon by everyone involved in the project, reflecting the idea that the album serves as a final chapter or closing statement from the late singer.
Tim Williams said his father would likely be proud of the finished project and pleased with the work done to bring the recordings to life. He believes Don Williams would approve of both the album and the care taken by those who helped complete it. For longtime fans, Epilogue: The Cellar Tapes adds a meaningful new piece to the legacy of an artist whose understated style, warm voice, and timeless songs left a lasting mark on country music.
