Frank Leboeuf Slams Kylian Mbappé in Blunt Criticism

Frank Leboeuf has sharply questioned Kylian Mbappé’s leadership qualities in a recent interview, arguing that the France captain remains too individualistic to be considered a true leader. Speaking to Sportsboom, the former French international said Mbappé’s goal-scoring record is not enough to settle the debate, because leadership in football also depends on sacrifice, discipline, and commitment to the collective.

Leboeuf said he values players such as William Saliba and N’Golo Kanté because, in his view, they are willing to put the team first. He contrasted them with Mbappé, suggesting that a player can be brilliant individually without necessarily embodying the qualities required to lead others. For Leboeuf, the difference lies in attitude as much as talent.

The former defender also pointed to Antoine Griezmann as an example of a genuine leader, praising both his influence on the pitch and his understanding of the game. He added that Ousmane Dembélé’s recent remarks about defensive effort reflect a basic truth in modern football: players who do not contribute defensively risk being left out by their coaches, regardless of their attacking talent.

Leboeuf made clear that his criticism was not personal, describing Mbappé as a very good person and an intelligent, cultured individual. However, he insisted that the forward’s vision of football does not match his own standards for leadership. The comments add to an ongoing debate in Spain and France over Mbappé’s role, influence, and responsibility as captain of the national team.

Despite Mbappé’s extraordinary scoring numbers and status as one of the world’s biggest stars, questions about his leadership continue to follow him. Leboeuf’s remarks are likely to fuel further discussion about what defines a leader in football: statistics and star power, or selflessness, defensive work, and the ability to elevate teammates.
