Marcia Lucas, the editor who helped shape the first Star Wars film and the former wife of creator George Lucas, has died at the age of 80. Her family confirmed that she died on May 27 of metastatic cancer at her home in Rancho Mirage, California, where she was surrounded by loved ones.

A statement from her family described her as “a true trailblazer for women in film and one of the most influential editors in cinematic history.” Marcia Lucas played a significant behind-the-scenes role in one of the most successful and enduring film franchises ever made, contributing to the shaping of the original Star Wars movie through her editing work.

Marcia met George Lucas in 1967, when both were hired to assist acclaimed editor Verna Fields on a documentary project. Their professional connection soon became personal, and the couple began dating before marrying in 1969. At the time, Marcia was beginning to establish herself in the film industry.

Her early career included work as an assistant editor on Francis Ford Coppola’s 1969 film The Rain People. She also assisted on George Lucas’s first full-length feature, THX 1138, released in 1971. These projects marked the start of a career that placed her at the center of some of the most important filmmaking of her era.

Marcia Lucas is widely remembered for her contribution to Star Wars, where her editorial work helped define the pacing and emotional impact of the film that launched the franchise. Her influence extended beyond a single title, and her legacy is tied to the craftsmanship that helped make Star Wars a global cultural phenomenon.

Her death marks the loss of a key creative figure in Hollywood history, particularly for women working in film editing and production. She is being remembered not only for her connection to George Lucas, but for her own achievements and lasting impact on cinema.
