Ex-Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson Dubbed the Royal Family’s “Bonnie and Clyde” After Scandals

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson’s long and unusual relationship has again drawn attention, with royal biographer Andrew Lownie describing the pair as more of a business partnership than a conventional post-divorce arrangement. Lownie said their bond lasted because they continued to support one another’s interests, even after their marriage ended in 1992 and their divorce was finalized in 1996. He compared them to “Bonnie and Clyde,” suggesting they enabled each other’s behavior and maintained loyalty despite their separation.

The former Duke and Duchess of York lived together for years at Windsor after their divorce, a setup Lownie said reflected their unconventional dynamic. He claimed Ferguson remained connected to Andrew because of his position in the royal family, while Andrew reportedly valued her loyalty, especially as she stayed one of the last people to remain publicly supportive of him. According to Lownie, their household arrangement allowed them to present the image of a family while living largely independent lives.

The relationship has become even more scrutinized after both were stripped of their titles and evicted from Royal Lodge in 2025 due to their association with Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew was later moved to Sandringham, while Ferguson’s next residence has not been publicly confirmed. Lownie suggested that, unlike in Britain, they could find more social acceptance in the Middle East, where he argued wealthy royals, politicians, and business figures would be less concerned about their past ties to Epstein and more willing to support them financially.

Despite the public pressure and their separate lives, those close to the story say the two remain in contact. Commentator Ingrid Seward said Ferguson would not want to abandon Andrew and emphasized that he is the father of her children, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Seward also noted that Andrew has always viewed Ferguson as the most important woman in his life in that role, which she believes helps explain why they continue to maintain a connection.

Their relationship has long been marked by its mix of loyalty, independence, and public controversy. Even after their marriage ended, they remained closely linked through family, shared living arrangements, and a continuing personal and practical reliance on one another.
