Ariana Grande Enters a New Era With “Hate That I Made You Love Me”
Ariana Grande has launched a new musical chapter with “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the first single from her upcoming eighth studio album, Petal. The mid-tempo track leans into breakup territory, with Grande delivering a restrained vocal performance over a smooth, moving instrumental. In the lyrics, she reflects on emotional fallout, insecurity, and misplaced blame, framing the song as a pointed yet reflective response to a relationship gone wrong.
Petal is set for release on July 31 via Republic Records and marks Grande’s latest full-length project following Eternal Sunshine. The album was executive produced and co-written by Grande and Ilya, a longtime collaborator who previously worked with her on Dangerous Woman and has also contributed to projects by Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, and Beyoncé. Grande first announced the album in late April, describing it as a work that represents “life” and growth emerging through difficult conditions.
She introduced “Hate That I Made You Love Me” earlier this month, calling it one of her favorite songs she has ever written. The track was produced with Ilya and Max Martin, who also collaborated with Grande on her 2024 album Eternal Sunshine. A music video for the single is scheduled to premiere Monday at 8 a.m. PT. It was directed by Christian Breslauer, with Janusz Kaminski serving as director of photography, suggesting a high-profile visual rollout to match the single’s release.
The new era arrives as Grande prepares for her Eternal Sunshine tour, which begins June 6 at Oakland Arena in Oakland, California, and concludes in September at London’s O2 Arena. Although the tour was originally tied to Eternal Sunshine and its deluxe edition Brighter Days Ahead, the addition of new material from Petal could expand the setlist and reshape the live experience for fans. The timing also positions the new album as part of a broader creative transition rather than a separate standalone release.
Grande has previously suggested that this tour may be her last for a significant period. In a recent interview, she said the coming years may look very different from the past decade and a half, and described the upcoming run as potentially “one last hurrah.” While she stopped short of confirming any long-term hiatus, her comments underscored the emotional weight of the tour and the significance of this moment in her career.
With a new album, a lead single, an upcoming video, and a major tour all arriving within months of each other, Grande is entering a high-profile phase that appears designed to showcase both a new sound and a new artistic direction. Petal now stands as one of her most closely watched releases, with fans looking to see how the album develops the themes introduced in its first single.
