The Voice Mentors’ Playful Trash Talk Is Peak TV, and I’m Loving Kelly Clarkson Teasing the Newcomer
NBC’s The Voice will reach a major milestone when it returns in fall 2026, with Season 30 set to crown the show’s 30th champion since the singing competition first premiered 15 years ago. A big part of The Voice’s long-running appeal has always been the dynamic between the contestants and the superstar coaches, whose rivalry often becomes as entertaining as the performances themselves. That competitive energy appears to be alive again ahead of the new season, even before filming begins.
Country singer Riley Green, who is joining the coaching panel for the first time in Season 30, said Kelly Clarkson has already started talking trash to him. Speaking to E! News before the American Music Awards, Green said he had recently met Queen Latifah and received a message from Clarkson that poked fun at the show and signaled she was ready for another round of competition. Green also noted that he had not yet met Adam Levine, another returning coach.
As one of the newest faces in the Big Red Chair, Green is stepping into a familiar but highly competitive environment. The Voice is structured as two contests at once: one among the singers trying to launch their careers, and another among the coaches fighting to land the strongest talent for their teams. That setup often creates a playful but intense atmosphere, and Green suggested Clarkson has been the most outspoken so far. He said she has “definitely talked the most trash,” adding that she will probably be “tough.”
Clarkson’s track record backs that up. During her 10 seasons as a coach, she has taken four artists all the way to the finale and claimed four victories, matching Adam Levine’s total wins, though Levine reached that mark over a much longer run of 19 seasons. Clarkson also showed her competitive side during Season 29’s Battle of Champions, where she won both the Triple Turn Competition and the All-Star Showdown, a special format that brought back former team members from the coaches’ past seasons. She ultimately did not win the season, however, as Levine’s artist Alexia Jayy took the top prize.
Even so, Clarkson’s early message to Green suggests she is already treating the rookie like a real rival. That kind of instant tension could be a major storyline when Season 30 begins. Fans will get to watch the chemistry between Green, Clarkson, Levine and Queen Latifah develop in real time as the season progresses, adding another layer to the show’s usual mix of performance, mentoring and coach competition.
The Voice Season 30 is scheduled to premiere in September 2026 on NBC, with episodes available to stream the following day on Peacock for subscribers.
