From Background Dancer in Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor Films to One of Bollywood’s Highest-Paid Actors: His Journey from a First Salary of Rs 1.5 Lakh

Shahid Kapoor’s rise in Bollywood is being remembered as an inspiring story of persistence, rejection and eventual success. A recent episode of India’s Best Dancer Season 5 brought his early struggles back into focus when Karisma Kapoor spoke about his journey from being a background dancer to becoming one of the industry’s most successful stars. The conversation began after contestant Prince revealed that he had also worked as a background dancer before joining the reality show, prompting Karisma to relate his story to Shahid’s own beginnings.
Karisma Kapoor recalled that Shahid had once danced behind her in one of her film songs, long before he became a leading actor. She praised his dedication and said his journey showed how hard work and passion can change a person’s destiny. The moment highlighted how far Shahid has come in the film industry, from unnoticed appearances in songs to headlining major projects and reportedly commanding some of the highest fees in Bollywood.
Before entering films, Shahid Kapoor was part of choreographer Shiamak Davar’s dance troupe in the 1990s. During that time, he appeared as a background dancer in several songs, including Le Gayi from Dil To Pagal Hai and Kahin Aag Lage Lag Jaaye from Taal. At the time, he was just one of many young dancers working behind some of the biggest stars in Hindi cinema, including Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Those early screen appearances would later become a memorable part of his career story.
Shahid made his acting debut in 2003 with Ishq Vishk, opposite Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala. The romantic drama became a commercial success and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. But his path to recognition was not easy. In past interviews, the actor has spoken openly about facing rejection in nearly 100 auditions during the early years of his struggle. He also said there were times when he did not have enough money for basic travel or food while chasing acting opportunities.
Shahid has also recalled that his first film salary was just Rs 1.5 lakh, a modest amount that helped him get through a difficult period. His early career was shaped by patience, discipline and the willingness to keep going despite setbacks. Over time, that determination helped him build a strong reputation as an actor capable of handling both romantic roles and intense dramatic performances.
Films such as Jab We Met, Kaminey, Haider, Udta Punjab and Kabir Singh established Shahid Kapoor as one of the most versatile performers of his generation. His success on screen later translated into major commercial value, with reports suggesting that he now ranks among Bollywood’s highest-paid actors. He is also said to have an estimated fortune of around Rs 300 crore.
Shahid Kapoor is currently preparing for Cocktail 2 alongside Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. His journey from a background dancer in iconic songs to a top Bollywood star continues to resonate as a powerful example of perseverance, talent and long-term success.
