Obsession Filmmaker Curry Barker Receives 7-Figure Offer for Next Movie

Curry Barker has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after new directors after the strong box office performance of his horror film Obsession, signaling a broader shift in where studios may find the next generation of filmmakers. Barker, who built an audience on YouTube before moving into theatrical filmmaking, is now drawing major studio attention as his career accelerates rapidly.
The interest intensified after Obsession delivered an unusually strong second weekend, earning more than its opening weekend and defying typical box office decline patterns. Sources say at least one studio tried to make a preemptive $10 million offer for Barker’s next original project even before he had pitched it. However, that move was complicated by Barker’s prior arrangement with Universal Pictures and Focus Features, which gave Blumhouse-Atomic Monster first rights to negotiate for his next original feature. Once the studio learned of that setup, it backed off, though it could still re-enter the race if Universal does not move forward. Another studio is also reportedly preparing a bid.
No details have emerged about Barker’s next project, and no producers are attached yet. He may meet with Universal executives soon to present the idea. Universal, UTA, and Underground did not comment.
The momentum around Barker reflects the surprising commercial power of Obsession, which was made for just $750,000. Focus Features acquired it at the Toronto International Film Festival for $15 million. The film opened to $17.1 million domestically, then kept growing through strong word of mouth, earning about $3 million a day during the week. Its second weekend brought in $23.9 million, a 39% increase, bringing its domestic total to $62.3 million.
Barker already has another project completed: Anything But Ghosts, which he shot for Focus and is now editing. He co-wrote the film with Cooper Tomlinson, and both star in it. Blumhouse-Atomic Monster is among the producers. Barker has also closed a deal to write and direct Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24.
His rise is happening as other YouTube creators are also proving they can deliver for studios. A24 is preparing to release Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons, which is tracking for a major opening and could become the company’s biggest debut. Earlier this year, Mark Fischbach, better known as Markiplier, directed, financed, and distributed the sci-fi horror film Iron Lung, which grossed $50 million on a $3 million budget.
Together, these projects suggest that YouTube creators are emerging as a powerful new pipeline for Gen Z-focused entertainment. Studio executives say these filmmakers are connecting with younger audiences in ways that many blockbuster franchises and legacy remakes no longer do.
