Wanda Sykes’ Wife Alex Niedbalski: What to Know About Their Marriage

Wanda Sykes has been a major figure in comedy for nearly three decades, but her personal life has also drawn public interest, especially her long-standing marriage to Alex Niedbalski. The pair met in a memorable way when Sykes, following advice from a friend to try a corny pickup line, instead talked to Niedbalski about a kitchen remodeling project while riding a ferry to New York’s Fire Island. Sykes later recalled that the conversation felt instantly right, saying something about the encounter made her realize Niedbalski was the one. Their relationship quickly grew serious, and they married in October 2008.
Their wedding came just one month before Sykes publicly came out as a lesbian at a rally in support of same-sex marriage and against California’s Proposition 8. Over the years, Sykes has looked back on that moment as part of a larger fight for marriage equality, noting that she and Niedbalski asked friends to support the No on Prop 8 campaign instead of giving gifts. She has said that while California’s ballot measure passed at the time, the country later achieved marriage equality through the Supreme Court. Niedbalski also took Sykes’ last name after they wed.
Niedbalski works in the kitchen and design industry, which adds an extra layer of connection to how the couple first met. She has been described as an interior designer and has also held a leadership role at a kitchen countertop company in Canada. Although she is not a performer, she has often appeared in Sykes’ social media posts and comedy videos, showing support for her wife’s career and joining in on playful content that the couple shares with fans.
The couple became parents in April 2009 when Niedbalski gave birth to fraternal twins, a son named Lucas Claus and a daughter named Olivia Lou. Sykes has spoken candidly about the challenges of raising twins, especially the exhaustion that comes with little sleep and constant parenting demands. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she described her daily routine as a mix of caregiving and household duties, joking that she and Niedbalski were often so tired by the end of the night that they could barely stay awake through a single episode of television.
Sykes has also credited her wife and family life with inspiring parts of her comedy. In interviews, she has described Niedbalski as funny, even when the humor is unintentional, and the two have occasionally made lighthearted videos together online. These clips often feature affectionate teasing, dance routines, holiday jokes, or playful messages to fans. Some are more sweet than comedic, including Valentine’s Day posts that show the couple dancing and enjoying time together.
Before marrying Niedbalski, Sykes was married to record producer Dave Hall from 1991 to 1998. She has said that the experience of that marriage influenced the sharper tone of some of her 1990s humor. Looking back, Sykes has expressed appreciation for the happiness she found in her current marriage, contrasting it with the frustration she once felt in her first relationship.
