Who Is Chris Hansen? Robert Pattinson’s Journalist Role in Primetime Explained

A24’s upcoming film Primetime is drawing attention for Robert Pattinson’s striking impersonation of Chris Hansen, the former Dateline NBC host best known for To Catch a Predator. After the trailer debuted in May 2026, viewers noticed how closely Pattinson’s voice and mannerisms match Hansen’s familiar on-air style, sparking widespread reaction online.

The film’s official logline says that in 2006, Hansen set out to make television history, and the poster reinforces that idea with the phrase, “Are you ready to make television history?” In the teaser, Pattinson is heard delivering lines that echo Hansen’s signature cadence, including references to accountability, television, and the iconic introduction: “I’m Chris Hansen, with Dateline NBC.”

To understand the reference point behind the movie, Hansen became widely known for hosting To Catch a Predator, a hidden-camera reality segment that aired on Dateline NBC from 2004 to 2007. The series focused on sting operations involving adult men who believed they were meeting minors for sexual encounters. Instead, they were confronted on camera by Hansen and law enforcement, and many of the encounters ended in arrests. The show became one of the most recognizable and controversial true-crime formats on television.

Outside of that role, Hansen has built a career as a television presenter, journalist, correspondent, and YouTube personality. After To Catch a Predator ended, he later hosted Killer Instinct on Investigation Discovery, a short-lived true-crime series centered on homicide investigations. In 2020, Hansen launched his own podcast, Predators I’ve Caught, where he revisits past investigations and discusses cases involving predators and true crime.

Primetime is scheduled to arrive in theaters in September 2026, though A24 has not yet announced a specific release date. Along with Pattinson, the cast includes Skyler Gisondo, Merritt Wever, Phoebe Bridgers, Matthew Maher, Anna Faris, Sean Bridgers, and Bokeem Woodbine in supporting roles.

The film’s premise and Pattinson’s uncanny performance have made it one of A24’s most talked-about upcoming releases, especially for viewers familiar with Hansen’s legacy and the cultural impact of To Catch a Predator.
