Which Teams Could Take on the Elias Pettersson Revival Project?

Elias Pettersson’s long-term future with the Vancouver Canucks is being questioned despite the eight-year, $92.8 million contract he signed that began in the 2024-25 season. What once looked like a stable commitment could now become a trade conversation if his performance does not improve, especially given the Canucks’ struggles as a team and Pettersson’s uneven production over the past two seasons.

On a recent episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discussed possible destinations if Vancouver and Pettersson eventually part ways. The conversation centered on the idea that a move could happen as early as the start of the 2026-27 NHL regular season, though any decision would likely depend on how Pettersson performs in the near term and whether the Canucks remain patient.

The Detroit Red Wings were mentioned as a logical fit because they could offer Pettersson top-six minutes and use him to address a major need in their lineup. For a team looking to add offensive talent and strengthen its center depth, Pettersson could represent a high-upside solution if Vancouver becomes willing to move him.

Another possible landing spot discussed was the San Jose Sharks. Hutton pointed to the Sharks’ ample cap space and roster flexibility, suggesting they could view Pettersson as a reclamation project if his play does not rebound in Vancouver. A team in San Jose’s position could afford to take a chance on a player with Pettersson’s pedigree, especially if the contract terms become more manageable through retention or other salary considerations.

Hutton also said his initial belief is that Pettersson could still remain in Vancouver, at least for now. He noted that a change in environment or approach might give the forward a chance to reset and rediscover his form. That possibility means the Canucks could continue to evaluate him over the coming season before making any major decisions.

Even so, the overall outlook suggests that Pettersson’s value on the trade market may be complicated by his recent production and his contract size. Hutton emphasized that, at his current cap hit, few teams would be eager to take on the risk unless the deal became more favorable through salary retention. That leaves Vancouver with a difficult decision: continue hoping for a turnaround, or eventually explore a move if the fit no longer works for either side.

For now, Pettersson remains a Canucks player, but his future is becoming one of the more closely watched storylines around the NHL.
