Videos Show People Mysteriously Entering New York Manholes at Night: What Are They Doing?
Multiple strange videos circulating online have raised fresh questions about activity beneath the streets of New York City, after surveillance and social media footage appeared to show groups of people entering and exiting manholes in Brooklyn and Queens during the night. The clips, reported by CNN and other outlets, have drawn wide attention because they show what looks like coordinated movement in and out of the city’s sewer system, sometimes involving several people at once. In one viral video, about seven people were seen emerging from a manhole in Williamsburg in the early morning hours. Some appeared to be wearing headlamps and carrying tools, and one person reportedly came close to being hit by a vehicle while climbing out into an intersection. Another incident in Brooklyn’s Gravesend neighborhood reportedly showed a similarly sized group leaving a manhole around 2 a.m. before heading toward parked vehicles and changing clothes. Authorities believe those individuals may have been underground for roughly three hours. Earlier in the spring, footage from Queens reportedly showed three people in waterproof gear lifting a manhole cover and descending into the sewer system, with the last person closing the cover behind them. The incidents have fueled online speculation about whether the groups were urban explorers, treasure hunters, or people searching for something more serious. City officials said inspections after some of the sightings found no damage to sewer infrastructure, and investigators have said there is currently no known threat to public safety. Even so, the events remain under review. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection has stressed that entering the sewer system is extremely dangerous because of hazardous gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks, and confined spaces. Officials warned the public never to enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall. While no explanation has been confirmed for the mysterious nighttime activity, local residents have expressed concern and skepticism. One Brooklyn resident told CNN that the group looked like they were searching for something important, not simply exploring for fun. The unusual videos continue to spread online as authorities investigate what the groups were doing underground and why they were entering the city’s sewer system after dark.
