Classic Supermarket Staple from Childhood Debuts a New Product on Shelves

For generations, Welch’s has been closely associated with a simple choice at the breakfast table: grape or strawberry. The brand’s iconic Concord grape jelly, first introduced in 1923, became a cornerstone of its identity and helped establish Welch’s as a household name in fruit spreads. Originally developed from a product called “Grapelade,” the jelly built on a long history that included use by troops during World War I. Over the decades, Welch’s largely stayed loyal to its signature fruit-based formula, with only limited experimentation outside its core lineup.

Now, Welch’s is making a notable change by launching a four-berry spread for major retail stores. The new product, which began appearing on shelves this month, marks the brand’s first mainstream multi-fruit offering in more than 30 years. For longtime shoppers, the addition stands out because it moves beyond Welch’s traditional single-fruit focus and introduces a blend designed to fit modern tastes.

The four-berry spread combines strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries, creating a mixed-fruit profile that differs from the brand’s familiar grape-and-strawberry options. While Welch’s already sells a mixed fruit jelly in some settings, that product is an apple-and-grape blend typically found in single-serve packets in diners and institutional food service. The new jar, by contrast, is aimed at regular grocery shoppers looking for family-sized packaging and broader retail availability.

The product launch reflects Welch’s effort to expand its presence in the competitive fruit spread category. Consumers increasingly have access to blended jams and jellies from other brands, and the new four-berry spread gives Welch’s a more contemporary option while still leveraging its trusted name. By moving into a multi-berry format, the company is positioning itself to compete more directly with products already popular on supermarket shelves.

At the same time, Welch’s is also broadening its retail lineup through branded character partnerships. New Bluey-themed fruit spreads, including seedless strawberry and grape varieties, are arriving alongside the four-berry jar. These licensed products stick closer to Welch’s classic single-fruit identity, but they signal a wider push to refresh the brand’s grocery presence and attract families with recognizable packaging.

For a company long defined by one fruit and one flavor tradition, the introduction of a four-berry spread represents a meaningful shift. It preserves Welch’s connection to its heritage while acknowledging that today’s shoppers are open to more variety. After decades of staying close to its roots, Welch’s is finally adding a blended option to its mainstream retail lineup, giving consumers a new choice beyond the familiar red and purple jars.
