Cucurella, the Second-Highest Revenue-Generating Defender in History

Marc Cucurella has become one of the most valuable defenders in football transfer history, with his career moves generating record-breaking revenue for the clubs involved. The Spanish left-back, who is currently with the Spain national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, is set to join Real Madrid after the tournament in a transfer worth 55 million euros fixed plus 5 million in variables. That move pushes his total transfer value to 156.1 million euros, making him the second defender in history to generate the most money in transfers, behind only Matthijs de Ligt.
Cucurella’s rise has been steady and lucrative since leaving La Masia. His first major move came when Eibar signed him for only 2 million euros. Barcelona later exercised a buy-back option for 4 million, before selling him to Getafe for around 12 million. Getafe then transferred him to Brighton for 18 million, where he impressed in the Premier League and increased his market value significantly. Chelsea followed with a deal worth more than 65 million euros, making him the most expensive left-back in history at the time.
Before his pending move to Real Madrid, Cucurella had already accumulated more than 100 million euros in transfer fees across clubs. The latest deal elevates him above João Cancelo, whose career transfer total stands at 145.4 million euros, and places him among an elite group of defenders whose moves have shaped the transfer market. Other defenders near the top of the list include Josko Gvardiol with 126.8 million euros and Lucas Hernández with 125 million euros.
At 27 years old, Cucurella now stands as the most financially impactful full-back in football history in terms of transfer revenue. His journey from Barcelona’s academy to becoming a record-level asset reflects both his growth as a player and the premium clubs place on elite defensive talent.
