Charles Barkley Goes Viral Again Over Sydney Sweeney Comments

Charles Barkley drew fresh attention during Game 5 of the NBA Finals after reacting to actress Sydney Sweeney’s presence courtside, joking that her attendance showed “everybody’s a New York Knicks fan now.” Sweeney attended the game in San Antonio wearing a white Knicks shirt and sat alongside her boyfriend Scooter Braun, who has also been supporting the team during its playoff run. ESPN later included her in a celebrity montage of notable Knicks fans who traveled to Texas, alongside Timothée Chalamet, Spike Lee, John Turturro and Ben Stiller.
The comment came shortly after Barkley faced backlash for another celebrity-related joke earlier in the Knicks’ playoff run. During a halftime appearance by rapper Cardi B, he made a remark about her chest that quickly spread online and triggered criticism from viewers who found it inappropriate. While some fans defended the joke as typical Barkley humor, others called it offensive and questioned whether ESPN would discipline him.
Barkley later addressed the controversy on “The Dan Patrick Show,” where he said he was not bothered by the criticism and even joked that he hoped ESPN would fire him. He said he still has several years left on his contract and would not mind being paid without working. He also dismissed complaints about the remark, saying people who cannot take a joke should “kiss my a**,” doubling down on his refusal to apologize.
Beyond the Cardi B and Sydney Sweeney comments, Barkley has also drawn laughs for jokes tied to other celebrities. On a recent “Inside the NBA” segment, he turned a McDonald’s discussion into a joke about rapper Ice Spice after reports of an alleged altercation at one of the chain’s restaurants. His comments about “slappy Happy Meals” and suggestions that Ice Spice should “get it to go” sparked laughter from his co-hosts and the production crew.
At the same time, Barkley has also received praise for more serious remarks. Following the death of former NBA player Jason Collins, he spoke candidly about homophobia in professional sports and said society still has a long way to go in accepting LGBTQ+ athletes. He said it would still be a big deal if another active player came out publicly and argued that anyone who believes there are no gay players in sports is “stupid.” His comments were widely shared and applauded on social media for challenging stereotypes and showing support for the LGBTQ+ community.
