Tim Allen Reveals Surprising Perspective on Age Gap With Shifting Gears Co-Star Jenna Elfman

Tim Allen has shared a candid reaction to the age-gap conversation surrounding his Shifting Gears character Matt Parker and Jenna Elfman’s Eve, a pairing that could become more central if the show moves forward with a romance in Season 3. The ABC sitcom, which marked Allen’s first time playing a widower in a comedy series, has already placed Matt back into the dating world, and Eve has emerged as his clearest on-screen match. The Season 2 finale left the relationship open-ended, prompting attention to whether the two characters may become a bigger couple in the next season.

Allen said his feelings about the pairing depend largely on how the two actors are presented on screen. He acknowledged that age gaps can look more awkward in certain photos or lighting setups, especially when one actor appears significantly older than the other. At 73, Allen joked that he may look around 68 under favorable lighting, but he also admitted he does not want the relationship to feel “creepy.” He said that when the show jokingly references the age difference, it is not his preferred approach, though he understands the creative choice because it reflects what is actually there.

The actor also pointed out that the subject is not unfamiliar to him personally. Allen has been married to Jane Hajduk since 2006, and the two have a 14-year age difference of their own. Still, he made clear that he understands why viewers might be sensitive to how such pairings are framed, especially in a sitcom setting where chemistry and visual presentation matter. In his view, the issue is less about the numbers themselves and more about how the actors look together in a given scene.

Allen’s comments were notably direct, reflecting an unusually open response to a topic many actors avoid discussing so plainly. Rather than dismissing the concern, he acknowledged that Hollywood age-gap romances are often debated both on-screen and off. He also gave credit to the show’s styling and lighting when the pairing works best, saying that under the right conditions the dynamic does not come across as uncomfortable.

Matt Parker’s character design also helps keep the romance grounded. He is written as a successful business owner, a father, and a grandfather, which positions him as a mature adult rather than a stereotypical comedic oddball. That balance appears to be important to the show’s creative team, which has also introduced another potential love interest for Matt in Angela Kinsey, who is the same age as Elfman. That casting choice suggests the series is intentionally keeping his dating life within a similar generational range.

For now, Shifting Gears continues to build interest around Matt’s romantic future as viewers wait for the show’s return to ABC’s midseason schedule. Both current seasons are available to stream on Disney+.
