Islam Makhachev Recalls Massive 500-Person School Brawl With Khabib

Islam Makhachev has recalled a wild schoolyard fight in Dagestan that shifted dramatically after Khabib Nurmagomedov arrived with backup. Speaking to Red Corner MMA, the UFC lightweight champion said the clash involved two rival schools with around 500 fighters on each side, and his group was initially getting outmatched by older opponents.
Makhachev said he and his classmates were too young and were struggling badly until Nurmagomedov, who is three years older, showed up with several friends, including Hussein and Musa. “We needed some fire,” Makhachev explained, adding that once Khabib and his group joined in, the momentum changed quickly and the opposing side began to retreat.
According to Makhachev, the arrival of Nurmagomedov’s crew had an immediate effect, pushing the rivals to run toward their cars as confidence swung to his side. The story reflects the rough environment in which both fighters grew up in Dagestan, a mountainous region known for producing elite wrestlers, grapplers, and mixed martial artists.
Makhachev and retired unbeaten former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov have both spoken in the past about growing up around frequent street and school altercations. Those experiences, they have suggested, helped shape the toughness and composure that later defined their fighting careers.
The two remain closely linked today. Makhachev currently trains under Nurmagomedov’s guidance and continues to carry the same Dagestani fighting tradition into the UFC. He now holds a prominent place in the sport as one of the most dominant lightweights of his era.
Makhachev, who is listed at 28-1, is scheduled to defend his title next at UFC 330 in September. Nurmagomedov, who retired with a perfect 29-0 record, has remained a major influence on Makhachev’s career since his own fighting days ended.
The anecdote offers a glimpse into the environment that helped produce two of the most successful fighters in mixed martial arts. For Makhachev, it was not just a story about a school fight, but also a reminder of the bond, toughness, and shared history that connect him and Nurmagomedov.
