Knicks Must Keep Dylan Harper from a Career First in Game 5

San Antonio Spurs rookie Dylan Harper has emerged as one of the defining storylines of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, delivering explosive scoring performances that have fueled growing belief that he is on the path to stardom. But as the NBA Finals shift into Game 5, Harper’s next step may determine whether San Antonio can extend the series or whether the New York Knicks can finish off a championship run.

Harper has already posted four 20-point games this postseason, including 21 points in Game 4 of the Finals. Earlier in the playoffs, he scored 27 points against the Portland Trail Blazers and added 24-point outings against both the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite those highs, he has not yet recorded consecutive 20-point playoff games, nor has he reached that mark twice in the same series.

That pattern matters for the Spurs, who trail in the Finals and need Harper to maintain his offensive pressure if they want to turn the series around. In Game 3, he shot just 5-of-18 from the field, but his ability to challenge the Knicks’ defense still helped San Antonio earn its only win of the series so far. If he can produce another strong scoring effort in Game 5, the Spurs’ starters would have the support needed to cut the deficit and keep their title hopes alive.

The concern for San Antonio is that Harper has not followed up his big scoring games with similar volume. In the games immediately after each of his 20-point performances, he has yet to attempt more than 10 shots. One of those follow-up games ended in a 1-of-6 showing in the first round, while the second-round and Conference Finals contests were more efficient but still featured limited aggression. In those games, he shot 5-of-10, but did not consistently force the issue and attempted only one three-point shot across the two outings.

That trend suggests Harper’s scoring impact is tied not only to his ability to attack the rim, but also to how much he threatens defenses from outside. While he is not primarily a spot-up shooter, his best offensive performances have come when he keeps defenders honest with perimeter attempts. He has taken at least five three-pointers in three of his four 20-point games and at least three in five of his six highest-scoring games this postseason.

For the Spurs to pull off a comeback, Harper will need to find the right balance between aggression and shot selection. His downhill drives remain his strength, but his willingness to shoot from outside could open the floor and make his attacks more difficult to stop. If he can sustain that level of pressure in Game 5, San Antonio could still make the Finals competitive. If not, the Knicks will be well positioned to complete their championship run and close out the series.
