Saint Anthony of Padua Church Marks 150 Years in Pictures

Figarella, in the commune of Santa Maria di Lota, marked the 150th anniversary of its church on Sunday during the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua. Despite intense heat, a large crowd gathered for the celebration, which was highlighted by the presence of Cardinal François-Xavier Bustillo, bishop of the Church of Corsica. The event brought together residents, parishioners, and visitors in a strong display of local attachment to the village’s religious and cultural heritage.

The celebration had a special historical meaning, taking place 50 years after the centenary of the building, which was celebrated in 1976. At that time, the ceremony was led by another bishop of the Church of Corsica, Mgr Jean-Charles Thomas. This sequence of commemorations reflects a lasting spiritual continuity for the people of Figarella and underscores the importance of the church as a landmark in the life of the community.

The anniversary Mass was followed by festivities organized in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The municipality, led by Guy Armanet, offered refreshments and shared a convivial reception with those present. The success of the gathering was made possible by the strong involvement of many residents and local supporters, who contributed actively to the preparation, organization, and service throughout the day.

Beyond the religious dimension, the celebration also served as a reminder of the village’s deep sense of identity and collective memory. For many in Figarella, the church remains more than a place of worship: it is a symbol of continuity, tradition, and shared history. The anniversary brought together generations of inhabitants and reinforced the bond between the community and its heritage.

The event also highlighted the role of local commitment in preserving traditions that continue to unite the village. Through their participation and volunteer work, the people of Figarella demonstrated once again their attachment to the church and to the values associated with this milestone anniversary. The 150-year celebration stood as both a religious observance and a community moment, combining faith, remembrance, and celebration in the heart of Santa Maria di Lota.
