3 Keys to Victory for BC and Saskatchewan in Week 2

The Saskatchewan Roughriders open the new season with a championship celebration still fresh, marking the first time since 2014 that they begin a campaign as Grey Cup winners. Their first opponent is familiar: the BC Lions, who were eliminated by Saskatchewan in last year’s Western Final. The Lions, meanwhile, are looking to end a long title drought and capture their first Grey Cup since 2011.
Saturday’s 7:00 p.m. ET kickoff features two of the CFL’s top Western Division teams, both expected to contend again this season. Saskatchewan enters the matchup with momentum, confidence, and the emotional lift of a title run, while BC arrives with motivation after finishing just two points behind the Roughriders in the 2025 West Division race. The game is the first of three meetings between the clubs this year, with the next two set for BC Place in Weeks 12 and 17.
For BC, much of the spotlight will be on quarterback Nathan Rourke, who is expected to drive the offense after throwing 500 passes last season and producing an impressive performance in the Western Final, where he completed 23 of 28 attempts for 368 yards and three touchdowns. The Lions also return a strong group of receivers, including Keon Hatcher Sr., Justin McInnis, Stanley Berryhill III, and Jevon Cottoy, giving the team continuity in the passing game. Defensively, BC will need its secondary to slow veteran Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris, with key contributions expected from Jackson Findlay, T.J. Lee, C.J. Coldon Jr., and newcomer Darnell Sankey in the middle of the field.
Saskatchewan’s path to victory begins with channeling the excitement of a championship opener without letting emotions disrupt execution. Trevor Harris is once again a central figure, entering the season after throwing for 4,549 yards in 2025, his highest total since 2018. At 40 years old, Harris remains a major storyline as he faces a BC defense tasked with containing one of the league’s most experienced and productive passers. On defense, the Roughriders will rely on ballhawks Rolan Milligan Jr. and Tevaughn Campbell, who combined for 10 interceptions last season. Their ability to limit Rourke and the Lions’ deep receiving group could be decisive.
The matchup provides an early-season test for two contenders with championship aspirations. BC wants to prove it can take the final step after coming close in the West, while Saskatchewan aims to build on its title momentum and defend its status as the league’s standard-bearer. With star quarterbacks, proven receivers, and playmaking defenders on both sides, the opener carries major significance for the Western race and the early CFL standings.
