Will There Be an MSG Knicks Watch Party for Game 5? What We Know

The New York Knicks are one victory away from their first NBA championship in 53 years, sparking a wave of excitement across New York City and the surrounding tri-state area. Fans have packed watch parties in large numbers to support the team, with some gatherings turning disorderly. In the past week, more than 80 people were taken into custody and nearly 30 were charged in connection with unrest outside Bryant Park and Madison Square Garden.

The controversy intensified around the planned official watch party at Madison Square Garden for Game 4. The event had initially been expected to return after being canceled for Game 3, when President Donald Trump attended the game. The city announced the Game 4 gathering, issued a permit and set up barricades, but no screens had appeared near game time. Shortly before tipoff, Knicks owner James Dolan canceled the event, accusing Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Hall of imposing excessive security measures that would undermine the celebratory atmosphere.

City officials and the NYPD said the security perimeter was necessary to protect public safety, especially after the unruly scenes seen at Bryant Park earlier in the week. Restrictions that were first tied to Trump’s visit also remained in place, creating no-pedestrian and no-vehicle zones that blocked fans from gathering within several blocks of Madison Square Garden.

The city said it approved a ticketed event for 999 people, which it said was the maximum size requested by MSG. Dolan argued that limit was too small and would exclude the tens of thousands of fans who wanted to take part in the celebration. In a statement, MSG said it declined to use the permit because only about 1,000 ticketed people would have been allowed into the area, leaving the broader fan base outside and unable to celebrate near the arena. Mamdani, however, has said MSG did not seek a larger permit.

The dispute comes as another event complicates plans around the arena. On Saturday, Madison Square Garden is scheduled to host a concert by 5 Seconds of Summer on its “EVERYONE’S A STAR!” World Tour, with The Band Camino as a special guest. Meanwhile, other official free watch parties are set for Wollman Rink in Central Park and at Brooklyn Bowl. As of Friday afternoon, there was still no update on whether any official watch party would be held at MSG.
