Congress Holds Key Delhi Meeting Amid TMC Rift, Discusses INDIA Alliance Unity

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge chaired an important meeting of the party’s general secretaries, state in-charges and Pradesh Congress Committee chiefs at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi on Thursday, with top leaders including Rahul Gandhi, organisation general secretary K.C. Venugopal, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Jairam Ramesh in attendance. The meeting was held against the backdrop of recent assembly election results, reports of internal strain within the Trinamool Congress, and growing political turbulence at the national level.

According to party sources, the emergency-style discussion focused on the current political situation, the BJP’s campaign marking 12 years in power at the Centre, and the party’s strategy for countering the political narrative around Prime Minister Narendra Modi overtaking Jawaharlal Nehru’s record as India’s longest-serving prime minister. Congress leaders also examined the issue of defections, which has become a recurring concern for opposition parties, and discussed ways to strengthen coordination among non-BJP forces.

The leadership is understood to have spent time reviewing how Congress should respond to the BJP’s messaging and how to project a stronger opposition line on national issues. Another major theme was opposition unity, especially the need to maintain cohesion within the INDIA bloc and deepen coordination with potential allies in different states. The meeting came amid speculation that some Trinamool Congress MPs have been distancing themselves by sitting separately in the Lok Sabha and may align more closely with the priorities of the BJP-led government, prompting Congress to consider measures to protect alliance stability.

This Delhi meeting followed a recent INDIA bloc gathering, after which Kharge said the alliance parties would meet every two months to improve coordination on national issues. He added that the next INDIA bloc meeting is scheduled to be held in Hyderabad in August.

Kharge also said the alliance had decided to write to the Chief Justice of India over concerns related to the Special Intensive Revision process, alleged electoral irregularities and issues linked to voter lists. Opposition parties also reiterated their demand for the resignation of the Union Education Minister over controversies surrounding the NEET and CBSE examinations.

The AICC meeting reflects Congress’s attempt to respond to a rapidly shifting political environment, manage alliance equations and prepare a coordinated opposition strategy ahead of upcoming political battles. With defections, election-related disputes and alliance management emerging as key challenges, the party leadership appears to be focusing on internal organisation and external coordination at the same time.
