How the Suspended Love Island Police Officer Could Get His Job Back

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Mayor J. William Reynolds says former police officer Sean Reifel could potentially return to the Bethlehem Police Department after his early exit from Peacock’s “Love Island,” but only if he reapplies like any other candidate. Reynolds told TMZ that Reifel would not be guaranteed a job simply because he previously worked for the city or department. If Reifel wants to come back, he must go through the normal hiring process.

Reifel, 29, was one of the original cast members on season 8 of “Love Island,” which premiered on June 2, 2026. On the show, he introduced himself as a police officer and said he wanted to help people through difficult times. His participation drew criticism from Reynolds after it was reported that he had left his job to appear on the reality series. The mayor said the police department had invested time and taxpayer money in Reifel’s training and described the move as leaving Bethlehem with another vacancy in a department already struggling to fill positions.

Reifel’s run on the Fiji-set series was brief. He was the first contestant eliminated in an episode that aired on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Following his departure, his family shared emotional reactions online. His sister, Brice Marie, said producers had already told her that he would be the first person sent home, but she still found the moment difficult to watch. She also suggested that Reifel’s age may have made it harder for him to connect with the other women on the show.

The controversy around Reifel unfolded as “Love Island” season 8 continued to gain momentum for Peacock. The first three episodes set a record for the streamer, becoming the most-watched debut of an original season in Peacock history. According to Variety, the episodes drew 824 million minutes watched, a 74% increase from the previous year. That figure translates to roughly 3.7 million views based on the amount of content released so far.

Interest in the season also spiked during the show’s first live vote. When viewers were invited to help decide which Islanders the new bombshells would couple up with, demand was so strong that the app reportedly crashed. Peacock later extended the voting window until 3 p.m. ET on June 10, 2026.

Despite Reifel’s short-lived appearance, the story has sparked debate about public employment, reality TV, and whether a former city officer should be welcomed back after leaving for a television opportunity. Reynolds has made clear that any return to the police department would depend on Reifel reapplying and being evaluated under the same standards as all other applicants.
