Suspended EMPD Deputy Chiefs Mkhwanazi and Lerutla to Return to Court in July

Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni city manager Kagiso Lerutla briefly appeared before the regional court in Boksburg on Tuesday morning in a case linked to fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice. The pair, who were each granted bail of R30,000 in April after their arrest, face allegations arising from an alleged 2019 traffic offence involving Lerutla.

According to the case, Mkhwanazi is accused of helping arrange for someone to impersonate the city manager when Lerutla was expected to appear in court over the traffic violation. The matter has drawn public attention because of the senior positions held by both accused men within the Ekurhuleni municipality and metro police service.

The brief court appearance was procedural, with no major developments reported on the day. The court postponed the matter to 2 July to allow for full disclosure and further consultation between the parties. The postponement means the case will return to court later in the month as the legal process continues.

Mkhwanazi’s suspension from the metro police department and Lerutla’s role as city manager have added scrutiny to the allegations, which centre on possible abuse of authority and interference with the administration of justice. The charges suggest that the matter is not only about the original traffic case, but also about how officials may have attempted to handle it behind the scenes.

The April arrests followed an investigation into the events surrounding the 2019 incident, with prosecutors alleging that the conduct of the accused amounted to criminal wrongdoing. Both men remain out on bail while the case proceeds.

The postponement to 2 July gives the defence and prosecution time to exchange information and prepare for the next stage of the case. The outcome of the upcoming appearance is expected to determine how the matter will move forward in the regional court.

The case has become significant due to the prominence of the accused and the nature of the allegations, which involve possible corruption within a municipal environment. As the proceedings continue, attention will remain on whether the state can substantiate the claims linked to the alleged impersonation and court evasion.
