Trinamool Rebellion Reaches Delhi as 20 Party MPs Meet Union Minister Bhupender Yadav

A major internal revolt in the Trinamool Congress escalated to the national capital on Monday, June 8, 2026, as several party MPs gathered at the residence of Union Minister and BJP West Bengal observer Bhupendra Yadav in New Delhi. Photographs from the meeting showed MPs including Howrah’s Prasun Banerjee, Bankura’s Anup Chakraborty, Cooch Behar’s Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, Bolpur’s Asit Kumar Mal, Birbhum’s Satabdi Roy, Jhargram’s Kalipada Soren and Bardhaman Purba’s Sharmila Sarkar. According to sources present, around 20 Trinamool Lok Sabha MPs attended the meeting.
The gathering has intensified speculation that a section of Trinamool MPs is moving to form a separate bloc and extend support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre. Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar is said to be emerging as the leader of the rebel bloc. Dastidar, who was recently removed as Trinamool’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha, has reportedly begun warming up to the BJP.
Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, who resigned from the party and from the Upper House, was also reported to be present. There were also indications that another prominent West Bengal political figure, Suvendu Adhikari, may have been present at Yadav’s residence, although this was not officially confirmed.
The meeting came at nearly the same time as another gathering at the Constitution Club of India, where Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and general secretary Abhishek Banerjee took part in a meeting of the INDIA bloc. The contrasting developments underscore the widening split within the party, with one group aligning itself more closely with the BJP and the other remaining with the Trinamool leadership.
The rebellion is not limited to Parliament. Almost a week earlier, nearly 60 of the 80 Trinamool MLAs had openly revolted and elected Ritabrata Banerjee as a new Leader of Opposition. Ritabrata has welcomed the unfolding developments in Delhi, signaling support for the dissident camp. The crisis reflects growing discontent within the party, with rebel leaders claiming they had no opportunity to raise grievances inside Trinamool’s organizational structure.
Meanwhile, Firhad Hakim, former mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and one of Mamata Banerjee’s close confidants, met Ritabrata Banerjee at the West Bengal Assembly on Monday, adding another layer of political significance to the day’s events. The series of meetings and shifting loyalties suggest that Trinamool Congress is facing one of its most serious internal breakdowns in recent years, with consequences that could reshape both its parliamentary strength and its future political strategy.
