Mayim Bialik Shares Her “Nightmare” Reaction to Weight-Loss Drug

Mayim Bialik has described a severe and frightening reaction after taking a GLP-1 weight-loss medication, calling the experience a “nightmare” in a personal essay published by The Free Press. The actress said she took just one shot before developing intense side effects that quickly became a medical ordeal, including cramping, bloating, body aches, vomiting-like distress, and severe diarrhea. She wrote that she was unable to keep even small sips of water down without urgently running to the bathroom, and said that on more than three occasions she did not make it in time.
Bialik said the reaction was unlike anything she had expected and compared it to a past allergic response to an antibiotic. She said the symptoms were so overwhelming that they lasted for three days and included “sulfur burps” and repeated sneezing fits while trying to eat or drink. After speaking with her doctor and nurse, she was told that severe reactions can happen with GLP-1 medications because the drugs remain in the body for an extended period. Her doctor had reportedly warned her to expect the effects to last at least a week or longer.
The actress explained that her decision to try the medication was not mainly about weight loss. She said she has lived much of her life under public scrutiny and developed a complicated relationship with body image over the years, including during her teenage acting career and later after social media intensified pressure around appearance. Bialik said she had also struggled with disordered eating and shame about her body, but emphasized that weight loss was not the primary reason she considered the drug.
Instead, she said three different doctors recommended it because of ongoing health problems. Bialik revealed that she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease at 23 and later learned she also has Sjögren’s syndrome, dysautonomia, connective tissue disease, and mast cell activation syndrome. She said those conditions came after years of symptoms that included hernias, rashes, histamine reactions, palpitations, sleep disruption, and depression. According to Bialik, doctors suggested the medication because of emerging evidence that GLP-1 drugs may help reduce inflammation connected to autoimmune conditions.
After the intense side effects, Bialik stopped taking the drug after only one injection. She later saw a gastroenterologist, who reportedly told her that GLP-1 medications can be highly disruptive to the body and should be reserved for specific serious medical cases. Even so, Bialik ended her essay with a moment of mixed reflection, saying she noticed some physical changes after stopping the medication, including a slimmer face and looser clothing. Her account adds to a growing number of public stories from celebrities who have discussed difficult experiences with GLP-1 drugs, including nausea, vomiting, and other severe side effects.
