2027 Oscar Best Actress Predictions: June Update

Awards season projections are taking shape for the 2027 Best Actress race, with awards analyst Erik Anderson highlighting Renate Reinsve in Fjord and Sandra Hüller in Fatherland as the current frontrunners. Both actresses are already previous Oscar nominees, which strengthens their standing as early favorites. Reinsve’s profile is further boosted by the success of The Backrooms, while Hüller remains a major contender thanks to her continued prestige and visibility in acclaimed international cinema.
A major talking point in the category is Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, which won acting honors at Cannes for Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto. Anderson notes that the film appears to feature the pair as true co-leads, but awards strategists may try to separate them into lead and supporting categories to improve their Oscar chances. If that happens, Okamoto could be pushed into supporting, while Efira would likely remain in lead. The potential category split reflects a long-standing Oscars strategy that can shape how films campaign and where performances land on the ballot.
Other strong early contenders include Mikey Madison for The Social Reckoning, Daisy Edgar-Jones for Sense and Sensibility, Julianne Moore for the untitled Jesse Eisenberg musical comedy No One Cares, Rachel Brosnahan for Saturn Return, and Cate Blanchett for Sweetsick. Netflix-backed Gentle Monster, starring Léa Seydoux, is also expected to receive a serious campaign push despite its difficult subject matter. Anderson says Seydoux remains firmly in the mix, especially given Netflix’s history of supporting awards titles.
He is more cautious about newer names such as Inde Navarrette, who stars in the horror film Obsession. While her performance is reportedly getting attention, Anderson argues that the Academy usually rewards horror breakthroughs only under specific conditions, and that one-off examples do not necessarily signal a broader trend. He points to past examples like Amy Madigan and Michael B. Jordan to show that those wins came with significant industry recognition, established careers, or exceptional nomination strength. Navarrette, he suggests, still has a steep path ahead.
The rest of the field is crowded with well-known talent and prestige projects, including Julia Roberts in Panic Carefully, Natalie Portman in Good Sex, Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada 2, Michelle Williams in A Place in Hell, and Zendaya in The Drama. Anderson’s June ranking places Reinsve first, followed by Hüller, Madison, Edgar-Jones, and Moore, with Efira, Brosnahan, Seydoux, Blanchett, and Hüller’s second potential entry Rose rounding out the top ten.
Overall, the early race suggests a mix of established Oscar favorites, international prestige performers, and studio-backed contenders, with category placement, festival buzz, and campaign strategy likely to play a major role in determining who emerges as the final Best Actress nominees.
