Mike Myers Confirms Shrek 6 Is in Development Ahead of Shrek 5 Sequel

The Shrek franchise is entering a major new phase, with Shrek 5 now positioned as the first mainline sequel in 17 years and a new Donkey spin-off also in development. The revival marks DreamWorks Animation’s clearest effort yet to expand one of its most successful properties after the strong reception to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022. That film proved there is still major audience interest in the Shrek universe, helping set the stage for a broader rollout of new stories centered on the green ogre and his companions.

Original Shrek cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are all returning as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. The fifth film is expected to introduce new characters as well, while also refreshing the tone and direction of the series. Screenwriter Michael McCullers has described the project as a “pretty big reinvention,” suggesting that the movie will not simply repeat the formula of the earlier films. Early indications point to a story that follows Shrek and Fiona as they adjust to life with their teenage ogre triplets in Far Far Away.

The next chapter may not stop there. Dana Carvey recently hinted on his Fly on the Wall podcast that even more Shrek projects could be on the way. Recounting a conversation with Mike Myers, Carvey said Myers told him, “We’re doing two more.” If accurate, that would indicate DreamWorks is quietly planning Shrek 6 after the already announced Shrek 5. While the studio has not officially confirmed a sixth film, the comment has fueled speculation that the franchise expansion is being mapped out well beyond the next release.

Eddie Murphy has also confirmed that a standalone Donkey movie is actively in development. The project would follow Donkey and his dragon family in a separate adventure and become the third major spin-off in the franchise, after the two Puss in Boots movies. According to current plans, the film is slated for a 2028 theatrical release.

The scale of the revival reflects the franchise’s long-standing commercial strength. Across six theatrical films, Shrek has grossed nearly $4 billion worldwide, making it one of DreamWorks’ most valuable properties. Since the first movie debuted in 2001, the series has built a large and loyal fan base, blending fairy-tale parody, family comedy, and memorable characters. The success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which earned nearly $484 million globally against a reported budget of $90 million to $110 million, reinforced that the audience for these characters remains strong.

With Shrek 5 arriving in 2027, a Donkey spin-off following in 2028, and possible further sequels beyond that, DreamWorks appears to be positioning Shrek for a long-term comeback rather than a one-time nostalgia play.
