Cape Fear Reviews Praise Javier Bardem’s Sexually Charged Charisma, But What Do Critics Think of the Show?
Apple TV’s new Cape Fear series is drawing strong early attention ahead of its June 5 premiere, with critics praising Javier Bardem’s intense turn as Max Cady while also questioning whether the story needed to be expanded into a 10-episode format. The series reimagines the classic revenge thriller for a modern audience, with Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson playing Tom and Anna Bowden, the married attorneys targeted by Cady.
Based on reviews from critics who saw eight of the 10 episodes, the consensus is that the show keeps the suspense, menace, and psychological dread of the original material intact, even as it introduces new twists and contemporary references. Several reviewers singled out Bardem as the show’s strongest asset, describing his performance as charismatic, disturbing, and unhinged in a way that makes Max Cady feel both fresh and faithful to the character’s legacy. Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson also earned praise for anchoring the series with strong performances as the family under siege.
At the same time, many critics argued that the adaptation stretches the premise too far. Some said the series feels overly long, with added plot turns, expanded character beats, and extra violence that sometimes make the narrative feel overcomplicated. While the show’s pacing and twist-heavy structure were seen as entertaining by some, others felt the additional runtime diluted the tension that made Cape Fear so effective in earlier film versions.
Still, even critics with mixed or negative reactions acknowledged that the series has moments of genuine horror and paranoia, and that Bardem’s performance gives the project much of its power. The most positive reviews described the show as a slick, scary, and unpredictably twisted thriller that is hard to stop watching. More skeptical takes called it excessive and implausible, but not without flashes of energy and menace.
The early critical response has resulted in a 74% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, giving Cape Fear a Certified Fresh rating. That makes the series a notable but divided entry in Apple TV’s lineup, with reactions ranging from admiration for its performances to frustration over its length and complexity.
The first two episodes of Cape Fear will debut on Friday, June 5, followed by weekly releases. The series will stream exclusively on Apple TV for subscribers.
