Mubi Acquires Chilean Comedy Denominación de Origen for Latin America
Mubi has acquired Latin American streaming rights to the Chilean docu-comedy “Denominación de Origen,” with plans to launch the film on its platform in the region later this year. The acquisition follows the film’s strong performance in Chile, where the title became a box office standout in 2025 and drew more than 100,000 admissions, according to director Tomás Alzamora and producer Pablo Calisto.
The sophomore feature from Alzamora, who previously made “Little White Lie,” is set in the small Chilean town of San Carlos, where residents feel outraged after neighboring Chillán wins the prize for “Best Longaniza in Chile.” The story follows a group of locals who organize a grassroots campaign to secure official designation of origin status for their sausages, hoping to restore pride and recognition to their community.
Shot entirely in southern Chile, the film blends documentary and fiction and features a cast of non-professional actors, including Luisa Marabolí, Exequías Inostroza, Roberto Betancourt and Alexis Marín. The project is rooted in local identity, rural life and regional humor, while also addressing themes of dignity, belonging and cultural recognition.
Alzamora said Mubi’s acquisition is important because it extends the film’s life beyond theaters and festivals and introduces it to new audiences across Latin America. He added that the film’s strongly local perspective may still resonate internationally because many countries in the region share similar contradictions, humor and everyday struggles.
“Denominación de Origen” received major recognition at the 31st Valdivia International Film Festival in 2024, where it won both the Audience Award for Best Feature and the Special Jury Prize in the feature film category. Alzamora also won Best Director at the 26th Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema, BAFICI.
The film was written by Alzamora and Javier Salinas. Its creative team includes cinematographer Sergio Armstrong, known for “The Club” and “Neruda,” original music by Martín Schlotfeldt and production design by Nicolás Oyarce. It was produced by Alzamora and Calisto through Equeco, the production company they founded in 2016.
The acquisition adds to Mubi’s recent slate of international titles, including Fernando Eimbcke’s “Flies” (“Moscas”), which is also set for theatrical release, as well as “Sirāt” by Oliver Laxe and “Sentimental Value” by Joachim Trier. Mubi’s broader catalog includes acclaimed films such as “Die, My Love,” “Grace: The Beauty of Doubt,” “My Father’s Shadow,” “Sound of Falling,” “No Other Choice” and “It Was Just an Accident.”
