Watch: Everest guide stranded for six days rescued

The survival of mountain guide Dawa Sherpa, also known as Hillary Dawa Sherpa, after being believed missing on Mount Everest for six days has been described as a miracle. He was last seen above Camp 3, at an altitude of about 7,500 meters, or 24,600 feet, while descending the mountain after reaching the summit.

The case has drawn widespread attention because of the extreme conditions on Everest and the length of time he was unaccounted for. Sherpa had been part of the group of climbers navigating one of the world’s most dangerous environments, where thin air, freezing temperatures, storms, avalanches, and exhaustion can quickly become life-threatening.

According to the account pieced together by the BBC’s Rajini Vaidyanathan, Sherpa disappeared during the descent after successfully summiting the mountain. His last confirmed sighting was near Camp 3, one of the high-altitude staging points used by climbers on the way up and down Everest. From there, the mountain’s steep terrain and harsh weather can make movement slow and rescue efforts highly difficult.

Being missing for six days on Everest is extraordinary, given the severe risks climbers face at such elevations. Survivors found after prolonged periods in the so-called “death zone,” where oxygen levels are too low to sustain the human body for long, are rare. That is why Sherpa’s survival has been widely welcomed and celebrated.

The circumstances surrounding his disappearance underscore the dangers mountain guides and Sherpas face while supporting expeditions on Everest. These experienced climbers often take on the most physically demanding and hazardous roles, assisting others with ropes, routes, loads, and safety decisions in a place where mistakes can have fatal consequences.

News of Sherpa’s survival has been met with relief and gratitude, reflecting both the uncertainty of mountaineering at high altitude and the resilience of those who work on the mountain. His story stands out as a dramatic example of endurance in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

While details of the search and his eventual recovery are limited in the brief account, the central fact remains that a man feared lost on Everest for nearly a week has survived against the odds. For many, that alone explains why the outcome is being called a miracle.
