NBA Finals: Harrison Barnes Targets Second Career Championship

Former Ames High School basketball star Harrison Barnes is preparing for his third NBA Finals appearance as the San Antonio Spurs begin the championship series on Wednesday night in San Antonio. Now in his 14th NBA season and second year with the Spurs, Barnes has become a veteran leader on one of the league’s youngest teams. He previously won an NBA title with the Golden State Warriors in the 2014-15 season and returned to the Finals in 2015-16, giving him valuable experience as the Spurs chase another championship.
Barnes has shifted into a bench role during the playoffs, but he has remained a consistent part of San Antonio’s postseason run, appearing in all 18 playoff games so far. His presence has been especially important because of his championship background, calm approach, and ability to guide younger teammates through the pressure of a Finals appearance.
In an interview with KCCI sports director Scott Reister, Barnes said he did not expect to still be in this position at age 34, reflecting on the unpredictability of his long career. He said there were many seasons when his teams missed the playoffs, making this return to the NBA Finals feel especially meaningful. Barnes described the moment as unique and special, saying it is something he did not take for granted.
Barnes also spoke about the key reasons behind his longevity in the NBA. He credited his support system, daily commitment to work, and personal faith as major factors in sustaining his career. He specifically pointed to his wife, Brittany, as a steady and supportive presence throughout his journey. According to Barnes, having a strong village around him has helped him stay focused and continue performing at a high level for more than a decade.
When asked how much longer he wants to play, Barnes said he still feels young and believes he has plenty left in the tank. He suggested that his body will eventually tell him when it is time to stop, but emphasized that he does not feel close to that point yet. His comments reflected both confidence and gratitude as he enters another major stage of his career.
Barnes also discussed his ties to Ames and the state of Iowa, saying his success would not have been possible without the people and community that supported him growing up. He recalled help from those who took him to the gym, rebounded for him, and assisted him with school and other parts of daily life. Barnes said Ames and Iowa are special places and that being able to give others similar opportunities is important to him.
For fans in Iowa, Barnes remains a proud hometown figure whose journey from Ames to the NBA Finals continues to inspire.
