1975 Soft Rock Greatest Hits Album Makes a Surprise Chart Comeback 51 Years Later
America’s 1970s soft rock group America is back on the charts with its classic compilation album History: America’s Greatest Hits, which re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 191 for the week ending June 8, 2026. The album, originally released in 1975, is appearing on the chart for the 66th week overall, more than five decades after it first became a hit. It previously peaked at No. 3 in December 1975 and has since been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
The collection remains one of the band’s defining releases, bringing together 11 of America’s biggest songs from its early years. Among the tracks included are “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Lonely People,” “Sister Golden Hair,” and “A Horse With No Name,” along with a new version of “Sandman.” The album helped solidify the trio’s place on soft rock and pop radio during the 1970s, a period when the band was especially prolific.
America’s rise was unusually quick. After releasing five studio albums between 1972 and 1975, the group already had enough material for a greatest-hits package early in its career. The band never officially broke up, although member Dan Peek left in 1977. Today, Dewey Bunnell is the only original member still touring with America, and he is currently on the road as part of the Happy Trails Tour.
In a May 2026 interview with Rolling Stone, Bunnell reflected on the unexpected success of “A Horse With No Name,” the band’s breakthrough single. He said he had never imagined the song would become such a major hit, describing it as a song that seemed more like a novelty story than a chart-topping classic. He also said the song’s success was especially surprising in England, where America emerged as a new band during a crowded era for rock music.
The renewed chart activity comes as fans prepare for another release from the band. In July 2026, America is set to issue Halcyon Days, a new greatest-hits album that features re-recorded versions of some of its best-known songs. The album will be released on vinyl, CD, and streaming platforms. According to the description, it includes updated versions of “A Horse With No Name,” “Ventura Highway,” and “Sister Golden Hair,” as well as the bonus track “World of Light.”
More than 50 years after its original success, America’s music continues to find an audience, with both its classic compilation and upcoming releases reminding listeners of the band’s lasting influence on soft rock history.
