Zenande Chiloane Search Enters Second Week Near Karino Bridge

Police are continuing the search for Zenande Chiloane more than a week after a vehicle carrying her, Vigo Godfrey and Tintswalo Khoza plunged into the Crocodile River. Godfrey and Khoza were recovered on the day of the accident, June 7, and their memorial services were held on June 13. Chiloane remains missing as search teams work near the Karino Bridge.

The Ehlanzeni Diving Unit is leading the operation with help from volunteers who are searching on foot. Captain Pottie Potgieter said the search has been slowed by difficult terrain, including dense bush and several islands along the river. He said drones have assisted in the effort but cannot easily move through the thick vegetation, limiting their usefulness in some areas.

Search teams are also facing additional danger from wildlife. Potgieter said hippos and crocodiles have been spotted in the area, making diving operations more difficult and increasing the risk for those involved in the recovery effort.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation. Police have opened a case of culpable homicide as they work to determine what caused the vehicle to plunge into the river. According to the report, the students were travelling from a local restaurant when the accident occurred.

The search remains active, with authorities and volunteers continuing to scan the river and surrounding areas for any sign of Chiloane. Lowvelder said it will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
