Stranger Things: The First Shadow Ends Broadway and West End Runs
The stage production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow will end its runs on both Broadway and in London later this year and early next year, producers announced Tuesday. The Broadway production, which won a Tony Award, will play its final performance at the Marquis Theatre in New York on January 3. The London production, which won an Olivier Award, will close at the Phoenix Theatre in the West End on December 26.
In a joint statement, producers Matt and Ross Duffer said they were initially surprised when director Stephen Daldry approached them with the idea of adapting Stranger Things for the stage. They said they were struck not only by Daldry’s vision, but by the fact that the concept worked so well in practice. The Duffers praised the creative team for delivering what they called “cinematic theater” that stood apart from other productions.
The producers said the show attracted audiences from many places, including many who had never attended a Broadway performance before. They credited the success to the combined efforts of Daldry, writer Kate Trefry, director Justin Martin, and the production’s behind-the-scenes team.
They also thanked the cast for bringing the story to life on stage, highlighting Tony-nominated Louis McCartney among the performers. The statement ended with appreciation for the fans, whose support helped make every performance memorable.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a stage prequel tied to the popular Netflix series Stranger Things and has become one of the most notable recent theater adaptations connected to a television franchise.
