Sesi Franca Faces CAIXA/Brasília in Crucial Semifinal Showdown with No Margin for Error in NBB

Sesi Franca returns to the Pedrocão in Franca, São Paulo, on Thursday, May 28, at 8 p.m. for a decisive Game 5 of the NBB CAIXA semifinal against CAIXA/Brasília, with a place in the championship series on the line and no room for error. The defending four-time champions are chasing an unprecedented fifth straight NBB title, but they arrive under pressure after dropping Game 4 at home by two points in a tense, physical contest that once again highlighted how small details can decide a playoff series.

Franca has already shown its resilience in these playoffs. In the quarterfinals, the team survived a dramatic Game 5 against Mogi Basquete, sealed by a late tip-in from Corderro Bennett in the final seconds. That experience, according to players and coaches, reinforces the importance of composure in elimination basketball, where a missed free throw, a defensive breakdown, or a single rebound can determine the outcome. Forward Rafael Mineiro emphasized that playoff games are decided by execution and mistakes, saying the team must quickly review what worked, correct what failed, and return ready to close the series at home.

Mineiro was one of Franca’s most reliable performers in the Game 4 loss, finishing with 17 points and seven rebounds while bringing toughness to the paint on both ends of the floor. In his second stint with the club, the veteran has taken on a larger role in the rotation because of his reading of the game, physical presence, and championship experience. A three-time NBB champion with Flamengo, he has become an increasingly important piece for coach Helinho Garcia as the series has grown more demanding.

Franca also received a timely boost with the return of Georginho, who came back from a thigh muscle injury in Game 4. Even coming off the bench, he immediately helped organize the offense and added depth to a rotation that has been tested by fatigue. The team remains without wing Zu Jr., who is out for the rest of the season after surgery on the big toe of his left foot, making every available contributor even more valuable in the decisive matchup.

For Helinho Garcia, the key to Game 5 is not only tactical, but mental. He said Franca’s performance in Game 4 fell short of its dynamic showing in Game 3 in Brasília, though he stressed that the defense was not the main problem. Instead, he pointed to crucial moments where the team failed to execute. In his view, a Game 5 requires full concentration, emotional control, and the ability to dictate tempo from the start.

The night may also carry historic significance for Lucas Dias, Franca’s captain and top technical leader. He is one basket away from surpassing Olivinha and moving into fifth place on the all-time scoring list in NBB CAIXA history, with both players currently tied at 7,051 points. Despite physical limitations during the playoffs, Dias delivered 30 points in Game 3 and remains a central figure in Franca’s pursuit of another title.
