Lil’ Kim Arrives in Sydney Surrounded by Heavy Security
Lil’ Kim has arrived in Australia for her first visit in more than 15 years, landing in Sydney on Wednesday night ahead of a brief two-city tour. The rap icon, whose real name is Kimberley Jones, was met by heavy security as she moved through Sydney airport, with fans gathering nearby in hopes of catching a glimpse of the star. She was dressed in designer items including a denim jacket, chocolate leggings, oversized “K” earrings, Balenciaga Defender sneakers and a leather Birkin bag. She was accompanied by her boyfriend, Tayy Brown.
The visit is a short one, with Lil’ Kim scheduled to perform in Sydney and Melbourne over the weekend. Her first show will be a headline appearance at Carriageworks in Sydney on Friday night as part of the Vivid Festival, followed by a performance at Festival Hall in Melbourne on Saturday night. The concerts are expected to focus largely on songs from her first two studio albums, which helped define her career and cement her status in hip-hop.
Her 1996 debut album, Hard Core, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, while her 2000 follow-up, The Notorious K.I.M., remains one of her best-known releases. Both albums sold more than five million copies worldwide and drew widespread critical praise, while also attracting attention for their explicit lyrics and bold themes. Ahead of the tour, Lil’ Kim turned to social media to involve fans in shaping the setlist, asking them to share their favourite tracks from those two records.
Although Lil’ Kim became a major name internationally, her music has been more of a cult favourite in Australia, where her biggest local hits came through collaborations. These included the 2001 global hit “Lady Marmalade” from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack and her feature on Christina Aguilera’s 2003 single “Can’t Hold Us Down,” which reached the Australian top 10.
Her return adds to a busy year for touring R&B and hip-hop acts in Australia. The news also follows the announcement that Ashanti will head to the country for her own Australian tour later this year, with dates set for November. Lil’ Kim’s appearances in Sydney and Melbourne are expected to draw strong interest from longtime fans eager to see one of rap’s most influential figures perform live again after such a long absence.
