Ruben Amorim Emerges as Leading Candidate for AC Milan Managerial Job

Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has become one of the leading candidates for the AC Milan managerial position after the Italian club dismissed Massimiliano Allegri in May. Amorim, who has been without a job since leaving United in January after a difficult 14-month spell, has held conversations through his representatives with Milan, although no agreement has been reached. The Portuguese coach had previously been linked with a return to Benfica, where he spent six years as a player and made 154 appearances, but those links were later downplayed by sources close to him.
Milan are searching for a new head coach after failing to secure Champions League qualification despite a strong position earlier in the season. The club were nine points clear of fifth place in March after defeating rivals Inter, but their form collapsed in the closing weeks. They won only three of their final 10 matches and collected just 10 points, ultimately finishing one point behind Como, who claimed the final Champions League spot on the last day of the campaign.
Amorim is now regarded as a high-priority option as Milan consider potential replacements. Other names linked with the vacancy include Mauricio Pochettino, who currently coaches the United States, and Oliver Glasner, who departed Crystal Palace after guiding them to a Uefa Conference League final win over Rayo Vallecano.
Another former Manchester United manager once mentioned in connection with the job, Ralf Rangnick, is no longer available. Rangnick, who led United from 2021 to 2022 before taking charge of Austria, has signed a contract extension with the national team that runs until 2028, taking him out of the running for Milan.
If Milan appoint Amorim, he could quickly be set for a reunion with his former club. AC Milan are scheduled to face Manchester United in a pre-season match in Wroclaw, Poland, on 15 August, just one week before the start of the Premier League season. The fixture would offer an early opportunity for Amorim to come up against the club he left earlier this year, while also marking the beginning of a new chapter in his managerial career if Milan complete the move.
