Pierre Deny Health: What We Know About the Emily in Paris Star’s ALS Battle

French actor Pierre Deny has died at the age of 69 after a sudden and severe battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, his daughters announced through newswire AF on May 25. Deny was best known in France for his work in theater and television, and he reached a wider international audience after appearing in Netflix’s popular series Emily in Paris in 2022 and again in 2024.
Deny began his acting career in the 1980s, later building a long screen career that included roles in Under the Sun, Une Femme d’Honneur, Cinq Soeurs, Plus Belle La Vie and Tomorrow Is Ours. In Emily in Paris, he played Louis de Leon, the CEO of the luxury fashion conglomerate JVMA. His portrayal appeared in storylines across two seasons, helping introduce him to viewers outside France.
ALS, the illness that led to Deny’s death, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, early symptoms can include muscle twitching, weakness in the arms or legs, difficulty swallowing and slurred speech. As the disease advances, symptoms worsen and the ability to control muscles gradually declines. There is currently no cure for ALS, and it is considered fatal.
Deny’s family did not disclose when he was diagnosed, but described the illness as sudden and severe. His death has drawn renewed attention to ALS and the challenges faced by those living with the disease. The condition has also recently been associated in public discussion with other entertainment figures, including actor Eric Dane, further increasing interest in its symptoms and prognosis.
Following the announcement of Deny’s death, tributes began appearing online from colleagues and fans. Emily in Paris star Paul Forman shared a message on Instagram Stories expressing sadness over the loss and praising Deny’s warmth and talent on set. Forman wrote that it was a privilege to work with him and extended condolences to Deny’s family and loved ones.
Deny’s death marks the loss of a veteran performer whose career spanned stage and screen over several decades. While he remained a familiar name in France, his role in Emily in Paris gave him renewed visibility with international audiences, making his passing especially notable for viewers of the Netflix series.
