NHL Rumblings: Larkin Trade List Grows, Latest on Matthews, Werenski, Tuch, Lee and More

NHL trade and contract discussions are intensifying as teams and player representatives navigate a busy stretch ahead of the July 1 deadline. Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin remains at the center of the most fluid situation, but talks between general manager Steve Yzerman and agent Pat Brisson have reportedly stayed professional and constructive. Yzerman has even asked to widen the original list of three acceptable destinations, suggesting the process is still open. While the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers were the initial focus, other clubs have begun checking in, including the Dallas Stars. A third-team structure could also emerge to help Detroit secure the right return, especially if Minnesota cannot assemble the type of package the Red Wings would want.
In Toronto, the outlook for Auston Matthews appears much calmer. All indications point toward the Maple Leafs captain remaining with the team next season. His agent, Judd Moldaver, has not formally communicated that outcome to the club, but discussions with new general manager John Chayka are said to be cordial and steady. Matthews had reason to question the organization’s direction after the season ended without a general manager in place, but the situation has since stabilized. Unless something unexpected changes in the coming weeks, the reigning face of the franchise is expected to stay in Toronto, which would remove one of the league’s biggest potential offseason storylines. That would also be a disappointment for teams that had monitored his status closely, including the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and Utah Mammoth.
Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch is increasingly likely to test unrestricted free agency. Although nothing is finalized and a last-minute agreement remains possible, the current direction suggests the two sides remain too far apart on contract value. The negotiations appear to be shaped by a wide gap between comparable deals signed by other top forwards, leaving the Sabres hesitant to push into the highest salary range. Unless there is a breakthrough before July 1, Tuch seems poised to reach the market.
Speculation has also linked Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski to the same trade-request chatter surrounding Larkin, largely because the two are close friends and Team USA teammates. However, there is no indication that Columbus has received any communication suggesting Werenski wants out. He remains under contract for two more seasons, though his long-term future in Columbus could still be discussed later in the summer.
The New York Islanders are continuing talks with captain Anders Lee and his camp, and the door remains open to a return. General manager Mathieu Darche is expected to keep working toward an agreement until the July 1 deadline, but Lee still appears more likely to reach free agency unless the sides move closer together.
Former Kings general manager Rob Blake also drew interest from multiple teams before joining the Nashville Predators, including the Maple Leafs. Toronto met with Blake, but his previous discussions with Chris MacFarland made the eventual connection elsewhere unsurprising.
