New York Knicks End 53-Year Drought to Win NBA Championship Again

The New York Knicks have won the 2026 NBA championship, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 and ending a 53-year title drought. New York’s run through the playoffs was dominant, as the team finished with a plus-283 point differential and went undefeated in two rounds before dropping only one game in the Finals. The victory restored championship energy to New York and capped one of the most memorable postseason runs in franchise history.
Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with a standout performance throughout the Finals and was named Finals MVP. His leadership and scoring lifted New York when it mattered most, including a 45-point Game 5 performance on the road, a mark previously matched only by Michael Jordan in NBA Finals history. Brunson’s success also settled years of debate over whether a smaller guard could lead a team to a championship at the highest level. In the end, he did more than prove himself — he became the face of a title team.
The championship carried special meaning for the Brunson family. Jalen Brunson’s father, Rick Brunson, was part of the Knicks’ 1999 Finals team that lost to the Spurs. Now a member of the Knicks’ coaching staff, Rick will also receive a championship ring, making the moment especially meaningful for the family. The title also marked a major milestone for Karl-Anthony Towns, who joined New York in a major trade before the 2024-25 season and quickly became an important part of the team’s success. His presence strengthened the Knicks on both ends of the floor, and he played a key role in the postseason run.
One of the defining moments of the playoffs came in Game 4, when the Knicks erased a 29-point deficit and won by one point to take a 3-1 series lead. That comeback showcased the team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure. O.G. Anunoby delivered the decisive putback basket in that game, helping New York seize control of the Finals.
The title also reunited former Villanova teammates Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges with another championship together, following their 2016 NCAA title with the Wildcats. Nearly 10 years later, the trio once again found themselves celebrating a trophy together on basketball’s biggest stage.
The celebration extended beyond the court, with New York planning a championship parade ahead of Juneteenth, giving fans a full weekend of festivities. Longtime supporter Spike Lee, a season-ticket holder and one of the Knicks’ most visible fans, was also expected to join the celebration after decades of loyalty through the team’s highs and lows. For New York, the victory marked a historic and emotional return to the top of the NBA.
