Naomi Campbell’s Cannes Red Carpet Evolution: From 1996 to Today

Naomi Campbell has long turned the Cannes Film Festival red carpet into one of her signature stages, building a fashion history at the event that stretches back to her debut in 1996. Over the years, the supermodel has consistently delivered memorable looks on the Croisette, working with major fashion houses such as Chanel, Valentino, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and Alaïa while also proving that her style is often ahead of the curve. Her Cannes appearances show a rare mix of classic glamour, daring silhouettes, and trend-setting risks.

Campbell’s fashion evolution at Cannes reflects both consistency and experimentation. In 1996, she arrived in a neon green bodycon outfit with chartreuse peep-toe pumps, making an immediate impression. By 2001, she embraced a semi-sheer, heavily embroidered look for the amfAR Gala. Two years later, she leaned into deep color and drama in a midnight blue velour dress with a plunging neckline and side slit. In 2004, she shifted to a more Grecian style, wearing a white column gown paired with a Bulgari serpent necklace.

By 2007, Campbell was already wearing looks that anticipated later red-carpet trends. She appeared in a black tutu dress with sheer inserts for one premiere, and another see-through dotted dress for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, years before sheer dressing became a dominant celebrity trend. She continued to mix elegance with boldness in the following years, including a polished drop-waist look in 2008 and a disco-ball halter gown for the premiere of Biutiful in 2010. That same year, she also appeared in formal black tie attire with then-partner Vladislav Doronin.

In 2011, Campbell returned to a more traditional Cannes silhouette with a dotted black gown finished with ruffle details for The Beaver. After a brief hiatus, she made a striking comeback in 2017 in an Atelier Versace gown. Her 2018 appearance in a custom asymmetrical Poiret design again highlighted her preference for sculptural, fashion-forward dressing.

Campbell’s more recent Cannes looks have continued to attract attention. In 2022, she wore a plunging Valentino couture gown with a bold diamond necklace for the Decision to Leave premiere. In 2023, she delivered multiple standout appearances, including a high-impact Celine look covered in sequins for the opening ceremony, a feather-caped Valentino outfit with cut-outs for Killers of the Flower Moon, and a fully embellished Chanel couture gown with a striking neck strap and back detail for Firebrand. She paired the Chanel look with blunt bangs and understated makeup.

In 2025, Campbell remained a Cannes highlight. She wore a Dolce & Gabbana gown with a gilded bodice and dramatic tulle skirt for the premiere of Fuori, and later appeared in an asymmetrical white Alaïa gown with Pasquale Bruni jewelry for The History of Sound. Across nearly three decades, Naomi Campbell has used Cannes to showcase not just fashion, but influence, confidence, and enduring star power.
