Magic reportedly hire Spurs assistant as next head coach

The Orlando Magic are expected to hire San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney as their next head coach, according to ESPN, replacing Jamahl Mosley after Orlando’s early exit from the 2026 NBA Playoffs. Mosley was dismissed earlier this month after the Magic lost in the first round to the Detroit Pistons despite holding a 3-1 series lead.
Sweeney, who is currently serving on the Spurs’ staff during their run in the Western Conference Finals, has emerged as one of the league’s most respected assistant coaches. He also attracted interest from the Chicago Bulls and Dallas Mavericks during this coaching cycle, but Orlando appears to have won the race for his services. Over the years, Sweeney has built his reputation through assistant roles with the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks, along with his current position as associate head coach in San Antonio.
Before officially taking over in Orlando, Sweeney is expected to finish the season with the Spurs, who are preparing for a decisive Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday. If San Antonio advances, his departure could be delayed further while the team continues its postseason run, potentially all the way to the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.
The hire is seen as a strong move for the Magic, who are trying to bounce back from a disappointing playoff loss. Orlando showed promise early in its series against Detroit, but its weaknesses became exposed as the Pistons rallied to eliminate them. The Magic now enter the offseason with major questions to answer, including whether the Paolo Banchero-Franz Wagner pairing can become a long-term foundation. Wagner missed the final three games of the series because of injury, leaving that evaluation incomplete.
Beyond the uncertainty around its core stars, Orlando also appears to be in need of a true point guard to stabilize and direct the offense. While Sweeney will not have the final say on roster moves, his background working with elite guards around the league could help shape the team’s direction. His experience should also provide valuable input as the Magic look to strengthen one of their biggest roster weaknesses.
Defensively, Orlando is likely to remain one of the NBA’s toughest teams. Sweeney has earned a reputation as a sharp defensive coach, and his work in San Antonio has been praised by Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. That defensive identity should give the Magic a strong foundation as they build toward next season.
The bigger challenge will be offense. Orlando struggled to generate consistency and creativity on that end of the floor, and the team will likely need more shooting and better structure to become a more complete contender. Hiring Sweeney gives the Magic a new voice and a fresh direction as they try to take the next step into playoff relevance.
