Jason Momoa Exits Sony’s Helldivers Movie, Report Says

Jason Momoa has exited the upcoming Helldivers movie, leaving Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions in search of a new lead for the adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios’ hit video game franchise. The project remains active, with Fast & Furious director Justin Lin still attached to helm the film. It is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on November 10, 2027.

The film is based on Helldivers 2, a game known for its mix of teamwork, humor, and fast-paced action. According to the official synopsis, the story follows an elite squad of soldiers called Helldivers as they fight alien threats that endanger the fictional planet Super Earth. The movie is being developed as a major studio adaptation of one of the most popular game properties in recent years.

No reason has been given for Momoa’s departure from the project. The news marks a shift for a film that had been expected to feature the 46-year-old actor in one of its leading roles. Sony is now expected to continue moving forward with casting changes while maintaining the current production schedule.

Momoa remains booked with several other high-profile projects. He recently completed filming on Dune: Part Three and Supergirl, both of which are among his biggest upcoming releases. He is also set to appear in the new Street Fighter movie and will return for the sequel to A Minecraft Movie.

In addition to those franchise roles, Momoa is attached to the Netflix action-comedy Protecting Jared, where he will star alongside Andy Samberg. The actor, known for his roles in Game of Thrones, Aquaman, and other major films, continues to be one of Hollywood’s busiest stars despite stepping away from Helldivers.

Earlier this year, Momoa also made headlines after revealing troubling news about his home in Hawaii. While that issue was separate from his film work, it added to a busy period in his personal and professional life.

The Helldivers adaptation is still expected to move ahead, and the exit of Momoa does not appear to have changed Sony’s broader plans for the movie. With a strong gaming fan base behind the source material and a release date already set, the film remains one of the more notable video game adaptations in development.

The original Helldivers games have built a reputation for cooperative gameplay, darkly comic military satire, and explosive sci-fi combat, making the property a natural candidate for a feature film. As production continues, attention will now turn to who will replace Momoa in the cast and how the story will be brought to the big screen.
