Crystal Palace Agree Deal in Principle for RC Lens Coach Pierre Sage to Replace Oliver Glasner

Crystal Palace have agreed a deal in principle to appoint Pierre Sage as their new head coach, with the club now working to finalise a compensation agreement with his current side, RC Lens. The Frenchman is expected to sign a contract running until the summer of 2029, with an option for a further year, as Palace move quickly to secure a successor to Oliver Glasner.

Glasner has decided not to renew his contract at Selhurst Park, with his deal due to expire on June 30. Palace’s search for a new head coach gathered pace after Andoni Iraola emerged as another leading candidate before becoming Liverpool’s head coach, leaving Sage as the preferred choice. The club want to maintain momentum after a successful period under Glasner and have targeted a manager whose profile fits the direction they want to continue.

Sage arrives as a coach in strong form. His work at Lens has attracted attention after he guided the Ligue 1 side into a title challenge with Paris Saint-Germain during the season. Lens were still leading the table at the end of February, underlining the impact Sage made in a short time. His achievement was not limited to league form, either, as he also led Lens to Coupe de France success, a major milestone that delivered the club their first ever trophy.

That trophy-winning background mirrors Crystal Palace’s own recent rise. Under Glasner, the Eagles enjoyed the most successful spell in their history, lifting the FA Cup, Community Shield and Conference League over the past year. The club’s recent silverware has changed expectations around Selhurst Park, and Sage is being viewed as a coach capable of sustaining that winning mentality.

Tactically, Sage also appears to suit Palace’s existing structure. He has previous experience coaching Lyon and is known for using a back three, a system that Glasner established effectively at Palace. At Lens, he also built an attack-minded team while working with less possession than their opponents, showing an ability to combine defensive organization with ambition in transition. That balance is likely to appeal to Palace as they look for continuity as well as fresh ideas.

Although Sage has not managed in the Premier League before, Palace are prepared to back him. Glasner had also arrived in south London without top-flight English experience and went on to deliver historic success. Palace will hope Sage can follow a similar path and build on the foundation left behind by the Austrian, with the deal now edging closer to completion.
