Chris Meloni’s First Post-Law & Order: Organized Crime Role Was Directed by His Daughter, and He Shared Proud Dad Comments

Christopher Meloni has found a new project soon after Peacock canceled Law & Order: Organized Crime, and this one is especially meaningful because it involves his daughter, Sophia Meloni, making her directorial debut. The longtime Law & Order star appears in her short film Chop Cheese, which also features Daredevil: Born Again actor Michael Gandolfini and is scheduled to premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Society’s Short Fest in late June.

Meloni plays a bodega owner with a strong New York accent, a role he accepted out of admiration for his daughter’s creative work. In comments to Deadline, he said it was an honor to support a young artist he loves and respects as she takes her first steps as a filmmaker. He also noted that while his own father, a doctor, once broke the rule about treating family members, the Meloni family seems comfortable ignoring that unwritten rule when it comes to artistic collaboration.

The project reflects the close bond Meloni shares with his family, including his children Sophia, 25, and Dante, 22. The actor has often shared playful posts and text exchanges with them, showing a lighthearted family dynamic that fans regularly follow online. Chop Cheese was also a family-centered production in other ways, with Meloni’s wife, production designer Sherman Williams, involved behind the scenes, along with Sophia’s cousin Lisa Rudin, who produced Debunking Borat. Meloni’s close friend and Law & Order: SVU co-star Mariska Hargitay also had a connection to the film and received a special thanks from Sophia in the credits.

According to the article, the short film was inspired in part by Meloni’s son, with the story drawing on teenage lessons Sophia observed while he was growing up in New York City. That personal connection gives the project additional emotional weight, turning it into more than just a professional collaboration. It also highlights Sophia Meloni’s own emerging talent as a writer and director, following her studies in English and Film at Wesleyan University.

The piece suggests that while fans may have hoped to see a Law & Order collaboration between father and daughter, this short film offers a promising start to what could become more creative work together in the future. Even though Organized Crime is over, Meloni remains connected to the Law & Order family and appears likely to keep working with people close to him.

He is not disappearing from television for long, either. Meloni has already finished filming the first season of Dan Fogelman’s upcoming drama The Land. Still, the article makes clear that Chop Cheese stands out as a particularly special project because it blends family, filmmaking, and Meloni’s enduring appeal to fans.
