Brazil: Two Men Showing Possible Ebola Symptoms Placed in Isolation

Two men arriving in Brazil from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda have been isolated after showing symptoms consistent with Ebola, authorities said Sunday, as officials continued investigations following initial medical tests.

In São Paulo, a 37-year-old man from the Democratic Republic of Congo was reported to have developed a fever and other signs that met the definition of a suspected Ebola case. The state government said he was placed in isolation at the Emilio Ribas Institute of Infectiology. The patient was also diagnosed with severe meningitis, but health officials said the Ebola investigation would continue until specific laboratory analyses were completed.

The concern is linked to the worsening Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where health authorities say a new epidemic is progressing. Officials in São Paulo said the technical assessment indicated that the risk of the disease being introduced into Brazil and South America remains very low.

In Rio de Janeiro, health authorities isolated another man who arrived in Brazil from Uganda on May 22 after he began showing viral symptoms, including cough, chills and diarrhea. The city later said the man tested positive for malaria, but his case was still under investigation.

Both cases prompted precautionary isolation while doctors and public health teams worked to rule out Ebola through targeted testing. Authorities emphasized that early findings suggested other illnesses in each case, but they maintained surveillance because the symptoms could overlap with viral hemorrhagic infections.

The developments highlight the vigilance of Brazilian health authorities in monitoring travelers from regions affected by infectious disease outbreaks. Ebola is a severe and often deadly illness that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, making rapid identification and isolation essential for preventing possible transmission.

Officials have not said when the man from Congo entered Brazil, and the investigations remain ongoing. Health agencies in both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro said they would continue monitoring the patients until all confirmatory results are completed.

Despite the precautionary measures, Brazilian authorities repeated that the current assessment points to a low likelihood of local spread. The isolated cases are being handled within established infectious disease protocols while medical teams work to determine the exact causes of illness.
