BJP Chief Nitin Nabin Accepts Annamalai’s Resignation from Party Membership

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin on Friday formally accepted the resignation of former Tamil Nadu party president K. Annamalai from the party’s primary membership, the BJP said in a press release. The development came three days after Annamalai met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Nitin Nabin and BJP national general secretary B.L. Santhosh before submitting his resignation letter to the party leadership on June 2.
Annamalai is expected to outline his next political move soon. He had already indicated that he would share his thoughts on his future course through social media at noon on Friday, June 5. His resignation marks a significant moment in Tamil Nadu politics, where he has been one of the BJP’s most visible leaders in recent years.
A former Karnataka-cadre IPS officer, Annamalai joined the BJP in August 2020 and went on to lead the party’s Tamil Nadu unit from July 16, 2021, to April 11, 2025. During his tenure, he became a prominent face of the party in the state and played a central role in shaping its public outreach and political strategy.
He has contested two major elections under the BJP banner. In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, he unsuccessfully contested from Aravakurichi. He later fought the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Coimbatore, but was also unsuccessful. He did not contest the recent Assembly elections.
Nainar Nagenthran replaced Annamalai as the Tamil Nadu BJP president after the latter stepped down from the post. Friday’s acceptance of his resignation from party membership formally closes his current association with the BJP and adds to speculation about his future political plans.
Annamalai’s exit comes at a time when political realignments continue in Tamil Nadu, and his next steps are being closely watched. With his social media announcement scheduled for Friday, June 5, attention has shifted to whether he will launch a new political movement or take another route in public life.
The BJP’s confirmation of his resignation follows a series of internal meetings at the top level of the party, underscoring the importance of the decision. Annamalai, once seen as one of the BJP’s emerging leaders in the South, now stands at a turning point in his political career after nearly five years with the party.
