AIADMK, G.K. Vasan’s Tamil Maanila Congress may exit the NDA alliance, reports suggest

Tamil Maanila Congress, founded by the late G.K. Moopanar with the idea of “a prosperous Tamil Nadu and a strong India,” was rebuilt in 2014 by G.K. Vasan. At that time, several Congress leaders, including Gnana Desigan and Peter Alphonse, aligned themselves with him, but over the years they gradually left the party.

The latest political developments have created fresh uncertainty within the party. After Vasan decided to contest the 2026 Assembly election under the BJP’s lotus symbol, several district and state-level functionaries reportedly opposed the move and exited the party. Among those expected to leave is the party’s state general secretary, Yuvaraja, who is likely to join the TVK soon.

Against this backdrop, G.K. Vasan is now expected to move away from the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance. Political observers say he may shift toward the current DMK-led alliance, which does not include the Congress, as he recalibrates his position ahead of the 2026 Assembly election.

The developments mark another turning point for Tamil Maanila Congress, a party that has repeatedly seen leadership shifts, alliance changes, and internal exits over the years. Vasan’s earlier efforts to rebuild the organisation had helped retain its presence in Tamil Nadu politics, but the latest decision to align with the BJP has triggered visible dissent within the party ranks.

The reported exits suggest that the party is entering a period of renewed fragmentation. Leaders who once supported Vasan’s political revival are now distancing themselves, indicating that the debate over alliances remains central to the party’s future. The possible departure of Yuvaraja, a senior organiser, could further weaken the party’s structure at both the state and district levels.

If Vasan does move out of the AIADMK-NDA fold, it would signal another significant realignment in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape. His next step is being closely watched because it may affect not only Tamil Maanila Congress but also the broader alignment of smaller parties ahead of the 2026 election.

For now, the party remains at a crossroads, with internal opposition, leadership uncertainty, and alliance negotiations all converging at a politically sensitive moment.
